Musings...

Having sent off my first parcel recently, I mused on the environmental impact of my mini business (look, I'm unemployed, I have a lot of musing time). I tend to store my jewellery in small re-sealable plastic bags to stop them tarnishing. However, I don't think this is very environmentally friendly...I was (perhaps) particularly aware of this when posting things to Jen who I know is very keen on being green...

So, I am looking for ideas on how to package my pieces without damaging them and without using loads of plastic/bubble wrap...

  1. The first thing that comes to mind is re-using tissue paper. Another possibility would be some sort of paper can be recycled. If you have a shredder, you could shred magazine pages and then use the fluffy results to pad packages.

I believe that Etsy has a Green forum; you might check there to see what others suggest.

  2. I have used recycled tissue paper for your package (I was hyper aware of environmentalness!) I now need something else to be delivered in tissue paper for my next order! I shall check out Etsy's forum, thanks for the tip!

  3. I store my jewelry in plastic bags, too, since I have to travel to shows and wrapping them in tissue didn't work -- they all slid out into a big mish-mash in the bottom of the box. So I now reuse the plastic until the plastic is practically tissue-thin.

Another option is to invest in a jewelry travel case with trays, and use the anti-tarnish strips (just be sure to replace them every six months). They sell them at Fire Mountain Gems and shipping there is cheap.

  4. I always re-use packaging that my stock has arrived in: bubble-wrap, jiffy bags, boxes etc. Which sometimes means that the package can look a bit on the untidy side. But I get around this, when it happens, by inserting a little sentence on the bottom of the invoice: 'this item has been supplied using recycled packaging materials, in the interests of eco-friendly business'. No one's gonna argue with that!! x
